Software-only contactless acceptance on commercial smartphones has reached the point of routine deployment in markets where the regulatory and certification posture has caught up. The use cases that work first are micro-merchants, field service, and pop-up retail.
For acquirers, the implication is a meaningful expansion of addressable merchants without corresponding terminal cost.
